EICS Presentation on Truth and Reconciliation 2021

The Government of Canada has proclaimed September 30th as the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.  The day will honour survivors, their families, and their communities. It will also ensure that public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.

At a special public meeting on September 9, 2021, the Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS) Board of Trustees unanimously passed a motion to amend the 2021-2022 school calendar to officially mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation across the division with a school closure day.

EICS Board of Trustees Chair Ted Paszek made the following statement; “This National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is incredibly important for us to reflect on a very relevant issue in our society as a school community.  Also, as in past years, our schools will be participating in Orange Shirt Day/Every Child Matters events on September 29, 2021, which further provides opportunities to teach our students about the history and legacy of residential  schools.”

The addition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation will be reflected in our school calendars and websites immediately.  To view all of our division calendars in EICS, please visit:  https://www.eics.ab.ca/schools/calendar/school-calendars
