Student Services Department
The Department of Student Services provides a comprehensive range of programs and services in support of a quality education for all students in Elk Island Catholic Schools (EICS).
Each school offers programs and services that reflect a shared, collaborative commitment between and among school staff members, parent guardian(s) and community-based professionals to provide the most enabling environment for all students to grow and develop within a Catholic community. EICS is commited to developing educational opportunities in the context of Gospel values, where students' gifts and talents are celebrated and nurtured throughout lifelong spiritual and personal experiences.
Programs and services available to students and parents within a unique Catholic community include:
Special Education Services
EICS, through inclusive practices inspired by the Gospel, welcomes all students and provides equal opportunity for students to achieve success according to their unique potential within the context of the most enabling learning environment.
Each school has a Special Needs Team that follows a collaborative, team-oriented approach in determining student needs, developing school and community-based interventions and creating an Individual Program Plan (IPP). Parents are valuable members of the school's Special Needs Team and are strongly encouraged to play an active role in the development and implementation of their child's education program.
The Special Needs Facilitator provides support, direction and leadership for special education programming in each school.
Comprehensive School Guidance and Counselling Services
All schools in the Division have a comprehensive School Guidance and Counselling Program.
School counsellors provide developmental guidance instruction, responsive services, individual student planning and school community support services.
School counsellors are also members of the Critical Response Team that are available to respond to emergency situations.
The student, teacher or parent may initiate referrals for school counselling services.
Teacher Resource Centre
The Teacher Resource Centre provides Division staff with access to a wide range of instructional resources designed to meet student needs. The resources support each school's Comprehensive School Guidance and Counselling Program, as well as individual student program plans.
School Psychological Services
School psychological services provide direct support to school staff and parents in identifying and assisting students who have special needs.
Referrals are initiated at the school level by the Special Needs Team and require a referral form, prescreening assessment, and parental consent before an individual psychoeducational assessment will be conducted. Both parent/guardian(s) and school staff are provided with detailed assessment results and strategies for interventions within the school and home.
Speech/Language Services
Speech and language services are available to all EICS students. This service is operated through a joint agreement with our Regional Health Authorities - Capital Health and East Central Health Authority.
To access these services, parent/guardian(s) are invited to contact a member of the school's Special Needs Team.
Inclusive Behavior Consultant
All children with behavioural needs are fully-integrated into regular classrooms. The Division employs a full-time consultant to support these students and the staff working with them.
Student Health Initiative Partnerships
EICS is an active, supportive member of the Students Health Initiative Partnership. These partnerships have provided enhanced access to programs and services designed to better meet the needs of students and their families.
